about

Composed for Kaleidoscape | Refracting Light, Merging Colour. A group art exhibition held at Helium Gallery, Rotorua, New Zealand between May 28 and June 10, 2017.

This new work entitled, Kaleidoscopic Consort is an instrumental performance piece engineered as an extension (and accompaniment) of the two and three dimensional works within the space. The piece travels through a gradual arc, using simple repetitive shapes to create a trance-like pulse that morphs through several developments before finally returning to somewhere familiar. These shapes begin in the form of a high pitched pattern played in harmonics alternating within a five-bar phrase creating a foundation, which is built upon with various differentiating layers. Each layer introduces a new part, sometimes enhancing and reaffirming, sometimes refracting and exploring a tangent, re-spelling the original ostinato theme rhythmically or harmonically.

The five bar phrase is unusual, feeling as though the penultimate chord is the final, creating extra tension but also resolve at the same time by the often relaxed nature of the unexecuted cadence. Kaleidoscopic Consort utilises a five bar phrase to correspond with Maggie Covell’s series, The Deconstructed Music Box. The bold square chord changes represent the bright blocks of colour, and the subtle fragmented groove developments portray the kaleidoscopic effect, creating warped reflections repeating and morphing each time.

The piece has been designed to punctuate the emotive qualities in a collaborative context, providing a visceral experience that traverses between the visual and the auditory.
